Soler/Wright – Fandango

A “fandango” is a characteristic Spanish dance style in triple meter that came to prominence in the 17th and 18th centuries and was later adopted as one of the primary accompaniments for flamenco.  Antonio Soler is the attributed composer of this fandango, originally for solo harpsichord, an instrument for which he wrote more than two hundred sonatas.  Little is known about the piece, including who else might have written it; nonetheless, it is one of the pieces with which Soler is most strongly associated.  The piece is built upon a simple bass line with minimal variety, providing great possibilities for variation in the upper registers, with dramatic chromatic scales, dancing arpeggios, lively rhythmic interplay, and some surprisingly poignant counterpoint.  Gordon Wright’s sparkling transcription for guitar and chamber orchestra lends the piece a much greater range of color, as well as increased textural contrast through the interaction between the soloist and the ensemble.
