Choral music has played an especially important role in the
cultural life of Pomona College for more than 100 years,
beginning with the Choral Union and the Men's Glee Club in
the late 1800s, and in 1902 the Women's Glee Club. Today,
Pomona's choral tradition is carried forward by two
mixed-voice ensembles: the Pomona College Choir and the
Pomona College Glee Club. The smaller of the two groups, the
Glee Club, performs a challenging classical repertoire
spanning the sixteenth through the twenty-first centuries,
focusing especially on works composed for unaccompanied
voices.
The 2000 Glee Club boasts a membership of twenty-eight
singers, all of whom passed rigorous auditions evaluating
their individual strengths in singing and sight reading,
their abilities to learn a great deal of music quickly, and
their readiness to work within a small ensemble, where blend
and musical sensitivity are essential. The group rehearses
only in the spring semester of each year in preparation for
a series of concerts both on and off campus, as well as an
annual week-long tour.
While this compact disc was created in part to help defray
the costs of this year's tour, it was also made in response
to repeated requests for a recording of our work by the many
members of the administration, faculty, staff, students,
parents, and alumni of Pomona College who have long
supported our efforts. We especially thank President Peter
W. Stanley, Vice President and Dean of the College Hans C.
Palmer, the faculty and staff of the Department of Music,
and the Office of Development (which includes Alumni
Relations and Public Affairs) for their assistance and
encouragement.
